Meet The Basset Hound Mar 22, 2007
Meet the Basset HoundMarch 22, 2007

The perpetually sad look of the basset hound's deeply wrinkled face and the to-the-floor ears may be part of her charm, but that distinctive anatomy has a purpose, too.

Those hanging flaps of facial skin help trap scents, giving the basset a nose second only to a bloodhound in sensitivity. And her long 40- to 65-pound body and short legs give her an advantage over her prey when in dense underbrush. She's also happy to practice her hunting skills during a romp in the park, but what makes this hound a happy suburbanite or apartment dweller is her gentle disposition and loyalty. She loves being part of the family so much that her melodious bark can become a lease-breaking howl if she's left alone too long. The solution? Get two; bassets are truly pack animals, so she'll be happier with a friend.
